DIY: Window Cleaner

I like cleaning. My favourite cleaning agent used to be Windex (Glassex). When watching the movie ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding’ Antoni and I had a great laugh. The grandpa in the movie uses Windex for everything. Your hip hurts? Windex! Your car doesn’t work? Windex! Now I wasn’t that bad when it comes to Windex, but I did have multiple bottles in the house. I liked the smell, and I would clean every shiny surface with it. Unfortunately I had to part ways with Windex. My quest for sustainable living has driven us apart. Windex, if you read this, I have changed and you stayed the same, we need to say goodbye. Maybe in the future you find greener ways and we can meet up again. In this blog I want to show you my quest for something to fill the void which Windex has left. I started making detergent myself.

A long time ago I got a book as a present called ‘Niets Verspillen Doe Je Zo‘ (How to not waste anything). The book has a section on DIY cleaning, and the recipe I am going to show you is an adaptation of the one I found in the book. You will be amazed by how easy and cheap this DIY recipe will be, and best of all you can adept it to your own taste.

Step 1Stuff you need

Get yourself an empty spray bottle. Reuse, Reduce, Recycle tells me to grab an old one. As you can see my beloved Windex bottle is getting a second life. On top of this you will need water and cleaning vinegar, I buy it it packs of 5 litres so it lasts a while. To add some of your own taste you can also get some essential oil in a citrus edition like lemon or lime to get the squeaky fresh feel. To be honest I use leftover lemon squeeze to waste even less.

Step 2 – Shaken Not Stirred

What it all boils down to is that we shake. First you need to boil about 3/4th of the volume of your bottle of water. Let it cool down a little bit so you bottle won’t melt. Fill up the bottle up to 1/4th with cleaning vinegar and add the water. Let it cool down and add two to four drops of essential oil or lemon juice. After this put on the spray cap and shake it!

Step 3 – Enjoy The Benefits

After you have shaken your heart out it is time to use the spray. You can always add more essential oil if you don’t like the smell of vinegar. Now is also the time to enjoy the fact that you have used no chemicals, no palm-oil or other dirty stuff, hurray! Your wallet is happy as well, my books says this option is about 10 times cheaper than buying Windex.

This was it for today, I hoped you enjoyed this short post. If you have other suggestions for the recipe, do not hesitate to share!

Love,

Rinoa
